Peroneal dislocation can occur following an ankle injury and
often occurs as a result of forceful passive dorsiflexion (which means foot and
toes up towards the shin). This situation results in the tendons tearing away
from the supporting sheath on the side of the ankle near the lateral malleolus
(lateral ankle bone). The tendons often relocate but can be dislocated again
during passive plantarflexion (toes and foot pointed). This situation results
in a need for surgical repair of the supporting sheath.
