Achilles tendinopathy or (achilles tendinitis as it is incorrectly called) is a degenerative condition of the achilles tendon. Recent studies have shown that achilles tendinopathy occurs as a result of incorrect loading. This condition results in damage to the collagen structure of the tendon allowing neovascularisation (ingrowth of blood vessels and disorganistaion of the tendon structure) Because blood vessels and nerves traverse the same path the ingrowth of vessels into the tendon results in pain when the tendon is loaded. The changes in tendon structure must be reversed through a process called mechantransduction where mechanical load is used to allow the form of the tendon to be restored. In addition conditioning the structures of the knee, the hip and the lumbopelvic region is required.
