Plantar fasciopathy or plantar fascitis as it is incorrectly called is a degenerative condition of the plantar fascia. Recent studies have shown that Plantar fasciopathy occurs as a result of incorrect loading. This condition results in damage to the collagen structure of the fascia of the sole of the foot allowing neovascularisation (in growth of blood vessels and disorganistaion of the fascial structure) Because blood vessels and nerves traverse the same path the ingrowth of vessels into the fascia results in pain under load. The changes in structure must be reversed through mechantransduction, where mechanical load is used to allow the form of the fascia to be restored. In addition conditioning the structures of the knee, the hip and the lumbopelvic region is required along with other interventions depending on each individual case.
