Bunions or Hallux valgus is a change in the static resting position of the big toe. It is characterised by valgus (lateral deviation) of the big toe. It often takes years to develop and results as a combination of constricting footwear, excessive pronation which is where the foot rolls onto the medial aspect of the big toe and other causes such as Achilles tendon contracture. Bunions are easily managed in the early stages with physiotherapy where these causes can be addressed. In the later stages arthroplasty surgery (straightening of the toes) is sometimes required to correct the altered position of the toe.
